Carl Sandburg High School (CSHS) is a public coed 4 year high school located at the intersection of La Grange Road and Southmoor Drive in Chicago’s southwest suburb Orland Park. It opened in 1954 and is part of Consolidate High School District 230. The campus is roughly 40 acres and has a student to teacher ratio of about 15.85 with an average class size of 19.2.
The school was formed in April 1952 after Orland District 221 and Palos District 222 were consolidated together to make up what is now known as the Consolidate High School District 230. The high school was named after the poet Carl Sandburg in April 1953. He actually visited the school every other year until at least 1960. They broke ground on May 17, 1953 with the original design intended to be a one-story structure capable of holding 1,200 people.
The school was built with the intent on expanding additional structures as the student population grew. The first set of classes were opened in September 1954. Construction for the first addition started in the summer of 1956, which would double the school’s size. A second addition was finished before the 1960 school year and included 10 new classrooms, a new library and the school’s first swimming pool. In 1966, they expanded their science laboratories, art rooms, music rooms and industrial arts training.
Their team name is the Eagles and their team mascot is an eagle. They compete in the Southwest Suburban Conference (SWSC) and are a member of the Illinois High School Association (IHSA). Their school sponsored teams include basketball, bowling, cross country, golf, gymnastics, soccer, swimming & diving, tennis, track & field, volleyball, water polo, baseball, football, wrestling, badminton, cheerleading, softball and poms.
They also have many different curricular activities to choose from including the debate team, speech team, varsity band, symphonic band, percussion band, marching band, symphony orchestra, philharmonic orchestra, concert orchestra, choir and a capella group.
Their average ACT score was 22.3 in 2005 and 98.1% of their senior class graduated. They have scored 90.3 on the State Test Performance Index and have ranked in Newsweek’s top 1,000 schools in 2003, 2005 and 2006 having ranked 607, 744 and 967 respectively.
